In celebration of National Short Story Month, I have asked several acclaimed fiction writers to answer five questions for me. Name one short story that inspired you to write short stories yourself?

The Dead by James Joyce. Was about a Galway (my home town) girl Nora Barnacle (Joyce's wife) and her young boyfriend who died after waiting outside her house all night in the Galway rain.
