Story Structure
One of the main reasons the StoryCon meeting was
organized and this web site was established was the founder's interest in Story
Structure and the way it and related aspects of story have become more "science-like."
It started with a read of Robert McKee's book,
STORY. The story structure ideas he either developed or wove together into his
approach seemed like they could be applied beyond screenwriting-- beyond
writing, to be used by psychologists and others.
A lot more research revealed that the idea of a
science has been bouncing around for some time. In the last 50 years, primarily
in the worlds of criticism, the narrative fields of structuralism, semiotics and
narratology, to name a few began making a science, or at least, began looking at
potential tools, models, concepts, etc. which could be applied to story creation
As this page develops, we'll be adding links to
articles, book listings, and other resources related to story structure and
related "scientific" approaches to story, which will include
 | Character: arc, development,
interaction, |
 | mythic aspects: archetypes, categories of
mythic story |
 | folktale research; For example, V. Propp's
Morphology of The Folk Tale (originally published in Russian in 1928) |
 | Psychophysiological research: the
neurobiology of story; how do the brain and different physiological systems
respond to story |
 | Temporal aspects of story; other arcs,
emotional response planning, etc. |
